Sad news from the road

July 1st, 2008 4 comments

We were both saddened to discover that two cyclists riding across Canada to raise money for diabetes were killed this past weekend. What a tragedy and one that hits especially close to home for us since we are planning on covering the same ground next summer. Please take a moment to read the blog written by Daniel, his friend from B.C. and two children. You can also watch their video about the trip. We’ve posted it below. If you’re touched as we are that these men died trying to do something good for others, then please consider making a donation to their cause, the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. And please, whether you’re riding the roads on a bicycle or in a car, be careful out there.

Ride of A Lifetime is an inspiration to all of us, raising funds for this terrible disease. To lose their lives doing something so special for others makes them true gifts of the Earth.

My deepest condolences to family and friends.

This really hits home as we prepare to cross the country next year also. The plane tickets are bought for mid May. Our kids will be 14 and 16. Many CGOB sites comment on the poor road conditions of Manitoba. As I was cycling this evening I couldn’t help but think of what those families are going thru. My prayers are for them this evening.

The only way I could guarranty that this wouldn’t happen is to not do the trip. But to me this is not an option. Just as they believed, the benefits outweigh the risks.

It is truly a sad day for cyclists.
