Bike Touring Survival Guide

Have a photo that captures the magic of bike touring?

Enter it in our contest to find a cover shot for the 2nd edition of the Bike Touring Survival Guide (due out in spring 2013). You could also win a prize!

  • First Place – Your picture on the front cover + €50 in cash + a print and eBook copy of the Bike Touring Survival Guide (note: you must have a PayPal account, or a bank account based in Europe or the UK, to receive the cash prize)
  • Second, Third and Fourth Place – A print and eBook copy of the Bike Touring Survival Guide + plus a DVD copy of the bike touring film Janapar.

A selection of the best entries will also be featured in an upcoming edition of BicycleTraveler magazine.

How To Enter:

  1. Go to the Bike Touring Survival Guide group on Flickr. Upload up to 5 photos.
  2. Tag each photo with BTSG2013 so we know it’s a contest entry. It’s also nice if you can add a description telling us where the photo was taken and anything else you think might be helpful.
  3. Send a Flickr mail message (to the Travelling Two account) with your name and email address, so we can easily contact the winners.
  4. If you don’t want to sign up for a Flickr account, you can also email us your images. We will add them to Flickr for you. Make sure to include your name and email address. Be aware that it may take up to a week before we add your images to the Flickr group. The email is: us AT travellingtwo DOT com
  5. Entries can be submitted until February 28th, 2013. The winner will be announced approximately two weeks later.

Photos

The Small Print:

  • Photos must be available in a minimum resolution of 300 dpi and 2,000px on the longest side.
  • The subject should be bicycle touring. Photos of racing bikes and other non-touring subjects will be disqualified.
  • By entering, the winner of the photo contest grants TravellingTwo.com the right to use the photo on the front cover of the Bike Touring Survival Guide. These rights are non-exclusive, meaning you remain entirely free to use and sell your photo.
  • All images entered in the contest may also be reproduced in an issue of BicycleTraveler magazine and on the TravellingTwo.com website. This will only take place in articles and posts associated with the contest.
  • Use of photos will be credited with the name of the photographer and (if available) a link to their website or online profile.
  • You must be the copyright holder of a photo to enter it in the contest. If your picture contains images of other people, a model release from those people (giving their permission for the photo to be published) will be required. You will need to obtain this model release.

The Judges

As the authors of the Bike Touring Survival Guide, we’ll pick our 10 favourite contest entries. From that shortlist, two notable bike touring photographers will help pick the winner. They are:

Paul JeurissenPaul Jeurissen – A freelance photographer specialized in bicycle photography, Paul’s images have been featured in international publications. He’s also published a free book of tips for Bicycle Touring Photography. Learn more about Paul on his website, PaulJeurissen.nl.

 

AmayaAmaya Williams – Together with her husband Eric, Amaya has cycled 90,000km through almost 80 countries. Amaya has taken some beautiful photographs of their journey. She shares these images, along with stories from the road, on the World Biking website.

What makes a good cover photo?

We’re looking for a picture that sums up everything wonderful about bicycle travel. The winning image should inspire people to run out the front door and jump on their bicycles. A good cover shot should also be:

  • Clear and in focus.
  • Striking and colourful, with a clear subject (not too cluttered).
  • Available in a high resolution: 300 dpi and 2,000px across the longest side.
  • Not overly manipulated in Photoshop, aside from minor touch-ups like cropping.
