“We sold our house and belongings in August 2009 and set off from our home in Scotland to cycle the countries of the world. We have been cycling ever since and loving every minute.  So far, we’ve cycled in the United States, New Zealand, Australia, Malaysia, Thailand, China, Spain, Portugal, France and the UK.”

“I am from Malaysia, and love to cycle tour. The photo here is from my trip to Koh Samui, Thailand. Actually, this was my first trial in cycle touring and i love it. Since my state (Perlis) borders with Thailand, it’s easy for me to ride in Thailand instead of touring in Malaysia. It’s a peaceful ride in Thailand and I don’t usually take the normal road but try to use small roads through the villages. For this year (2011), I plan to ride all over Malaysia in December. Happy cranking to all.”

Hannah Perkins

Hannah Perkins

Hannah’s big bike trip was over 6,000 kms from the tropical island of Penang to the spicy city of Chengdu, travelling slowly and mindfully through Malaysia, Thailand, Laos and China. She logged the journey on her blog, Pai Straight Up.

“Having never ridden long-distance on a bicycle before, it is hard to believe that I can now say ‘I have done it’,” says Hannah.

Her journey began as a reaction to a stressful job, that left her feeling burnt-out and pessimistic about the world.

“At no point did I think it would be easy and, I guess, that’s the main reason why I wanted to do it. I wanted to be challenged, to experience the unknown and find out what I was capable of. I wanted the space and time to think about things, other than how to make myself happy and save the world. I wanted an experience, be it a good or a bad one.”

Christian is from northern Germany but like many other bike tourists, he feels more at home abroad. Recent bike tours have taken him through southern and eastern Asia.

In January 2008, he rode from Malaysia to Thailand, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, Nepal and India. After challenging the higher roads in northern India, he returned home for the summer and his now planning more trips in Asia, basing himself in Nepal for trips out into the mountains. Read about Christian’s travels on his blog, in English and German: Terra Interminate (Earth Without Borders).
