Steven & Taressa

Steven and Taressa married in August 2011 and pedaled into their extended honeymoon.

They have little experience in cycle touring but such petty details haven’t stopped either of them in the past. With all their belongings in a basement in Lake Tahoe they have set off to taste, hear, see, feel, and of course ride the African continent.

Funny stories and pretty pictures of their travels through 2012 can be found at www.ourspokeandworld.com

Mirjam Wouters

Bike touring has become a way of life for Mirjam. She’s been on the road since 2001 and you can read about her travels on her blog, Cycling Dutch Girl.

“After a couple of years hitchhiking my way around Europe I picked up a bicycle and never looked back. I don’t have a strict plan, but ‘around-the-world’ sounds good to me…” she says.

“I’m not very fast, in fact I’m probably the slowest long-distance cyclist around because I get distracted easily… There is just so much to see and do! So far, I’ve cycled all around Europe from Morrocco to the North Cape and around the Baltic States to Istanbul. In 2007, I left Europe and made it to Australia in 2009, where I still am (told you I was slow). Anyway, the plan is to keep going untill I find something better to do.”

Blanche & Douwe

“Bicycles are like dreams, and we are pedalling them!”

That’s how Douwe & Blanche, two Dutch cyclists who’ve been to Cuba, all over Europe and Morocco several times, introduce themselves. They say there’s no better way to see the world than from the seat of a bicycle.

“After travelling a great part of the world by public transport , we got frustrated. Passing all those beautiful stretches at a speed of 80 km an hour feels a bit stupid. So we looked for a better way to travel and there it was.. the bicycle!!”

“Since then the cycling bug got us. This is the way to get as nearest as possible to all facets of the country you’re visiting. On our website you can watch the videos we made from our trips. Enjoy and get inspired!”

Ellen & Elmar

Ellen van der Zwan and Elmar van Drunen cycle together as much as they can and chronicle their trips on their Fietsjunks website (in Dutch). Ellen is the photographer – see her lovely images taken while cycling – so this photo only shows Elmar.

As a pair, they’ve visited countries such as Chile, India, Iceland, Alaska, MoroccoKyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and China.

“Elmar van Drunen also loves mountainbiking and road racing when he’s in Holland and he publishes technical articles all related to cycling. I am a freelance photographer and work for Dutch magazines such as Bike&trekking, Op Pad and Outdoor Magazine,” says Ellen.

“We are planning a 2-year trip starting in 2013. We would like to cycle from Alaska to Argentina. This year we’ve planned trips through Czech Republic and Canada.”
