“We sold our house and belongings in August 2009 and set off from our home in Scotland to cycle the countries of the world. We have been cycling ever since and loving every minute.  So far, we’ve cycled in the United States, New Zealand, Australia, Malaysia, Thailand, China, Spain, Portugal, France and the UK.”

Patrick & Rachel Hugens

Patrick & Rachel met in Nelson, New Zealand in 1993. Patrick, a Dutchman was cycling around the world. Rachel from USA was independently cycling NZ & Australia.

In 1994, they met up in Capetown South Africa & cycled to Nairobi, then onto Gibraltar cycling back to Holland. They settled in Boise, Idaho in 1995 and since then have quit their jobs twice to cycle tour. First in 1999 for 8 months in South America and then 2006-2007 cycling through Indonesia, Southeast Asia, Yunnan (China), Eastern Tibet and Lhasa to Katmandu, returning home from the Arctic Circle.

In the words of Jimmy Buffet, cycle touring allows you to ‘go fast enough to get there and slow enough to see’. There is nothing that compares to seeing a country by bike where you become part of the scenery rather than having it framed from a vehicle.

“We both love camping and cycling. For some reason it took some time for us to figure out that you could join them together and have much fun.”

“Our first tour was to Croatia and we really loved it. We went a couple of times to Wales as a warm up for our trip to New Zealand in 2010. In 2011, we are going to Denmark, France and a little tour of the UK, where we live. Our only problem now is where next, when and in what order? There are so many places to cycle tour.”

Tom Jackson

“I have just graduated university and before getting stuck in the 9-5 rat race I decided I should take some time out and do some more travelling,” says Tom (read his travel blog).

Tom has already proven his credentials as an adventurous person. During a trip in New Zealand, he bought a used mountain bike on a whim and cycled 2,500km around NZ with it.

This spurred another trip; a 10,000km journey through 26 European countries. Now that he’s discovered cycling, Tom’s decided his next adventure will be entirely on two wheels.

“To me cycling is the perfect way to travel, slow enough to see things others wouldn’t without taking too long to get between destinations. It’s cheap and good for you, I can’t see any reason why someone wouldn’t want to travel by bike (…well ok I can, but there are ways round most of the obvious issues).”

“Thanks to my bicycle I get to meet lots of locals on the way (and experience true hospitality) whilst also really getting off the beaten track,” says Tom. In future, he’s going to try and do more off-road touring, to help stay away from the worst of the traffic and really get out into the landscape.
