Patrick & Rachel Hugens

Patrick & Rachel met in Nelson, New Zealand in 1993. Patrick, a Dutchman was cycling around the world. Rachel from USA was independently cycling NZ & Australia.

In 1994, they met up in Capetown South Africa & cycled to Nairobi, then onto Gibraltar cycling back to Holland. They settled in Boise, Idaho in 1995 and since then have quit their jobs twice to cycle tour. First in 1999 for 8 months in South America and then 2006-2007 cycling through Indonesia, Southeast Asia, Yunnan (China), Eastern Tibet and Lhasa to Katmandu, returning home from the Arctic Circle.

In the words of Jimmy Buffet, cycle touring allows you to ‘go fast enough to get there and slow enough to see’. There is nothing that compares to seeing a country by bike where you become part of the scenery rather than having it framed from a vehicle.

See their beautiful bike touring photos.

Igel & Paola

Igel, Paola and Rambo (their rat terrier dog) have been cycling around the world since 2001. By 2009, they’d covered 29 countries, mostly in the Americas.

Now (in 2011) they’re heading from Germany to Asia, and they are going to change their vehicles as well: the next leg of the big journey will be on trikes with two dogs, with Rambo and his daughter Caramba! Follow their epic journey on their website: Grenzenlos (No Borders)

“I was born in North Dakota, grew up in Nebraska, and claim Texas as my last U.S. address before beginning my South American bike tour,” says Trevor.

In June 2009, he set off to pedal from Colombia to Brazil via Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. After a break from the bike, Argentina is next on the list.

“Though being a homebody has its advantages I’m looking forward to feeling the freedom and mystery of bike travel again.”
