“I have breathed the air since 1963. Although I have lived some days on this planet, I still do not have always a clear vision about my life! Regardless, hiking at home and around the world on foot as backpacker or by bicycle is one of my permanent life values, as is photography. In 2008 I decided to make my first long trip on a bicycle: a 72-day solo trip through Turkey and Persia. It was one of the most powerful experiences I had.”

Cara & Curtis

Cara & Curtis

In 2010, Curtis and Cara sat down to figure out long term travel options.

“Curtis mentioned cycling and I was beside myself until I did some research and fell in love with the idea,” says Cara.

“We have been cycling from Istanbul now for just over two weeks and we love it. We would never look back. Seeing a country from the saddle of our bicycles shows us the culture from all view points. We would never have met the people we have and seen the generousity of strangers.”

Their blog, We Went With Plan B, shares snapshots and highlights of Cara & Curtis on their bikes.

“We will continue from Turkey to Greece, then through Italy via Sicily, Croatia, Montenegro, Albania – Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia, Austria. Portugal and Spain. We’ll housesit in Italy for winter before finishing off our ride in March 2012 by riding from Italy to the UK.”

Mirjam Wouters

Bike touring has become a way of life for Mirjam. She’s been on the road since 2001 and you can read about her travels on her blog, Cycling Dutch Girl.

“After a couple of years hitchhiking my way around Europe I picked up a bicycle and never looked back. I don’t have a strict plan, but ‘around-the-world’ sounds good to me…” she says.

“I’m not very fast, in fact I’m probably the slowest long-distance cyclist around because I get distracted easily… There is just so much to see and do! So far, I’ve cycled all around Europe from Morrocco to the North Cape and around the Baltic States to Istanbul. In 2007, I left Europe and made it to Australia in 2009, where I still am (told you I was slow). Anyway, the plan is to keep going untill I find something better to do.”

“We ride a Thorn Raven Discovery tandem which we got for our wedding present nearly five years ago. This year (2o1o) we’ve been taking a break from work, and spent September to December riding from London to Istanbul,” say Rachel and John.
