Contest: Win A Powerfilm Solar Panel!

Powerfilm PanelA few days ago, we reviewed the Powerfilm Solar Panel. Now we’d like to give you a chance to try it for yourself.

Since we don’t really need a solar panel (we have our dynamo hubs), we’re giving away the the solar panel that we tried for the review.

It’s been very lightly used and should help some lucky cyclist to keep their small gadgets charged up on tour.

Just leave a comment and tell us why you’d like to win. It’s that simple!

You have the rest of the week to enter. We’ll announce the winner on Monday, April 30th.

I would love to win this most excellent piece of portable power equipment to charge my phone and camera on the road. I really like that it fold up for storage.

    Very cool, Jack

IThis year I am doing LEJOG with my partner Dan, who I have managed to convert into a cycle tourer! I prefer to get away form it all on tour, the only gadget I want to look at is my cycle computer. Dan, however, likes to use cyling apps, like the NCN Iphone app, as we go. Since we are camping, we won’t be able to charge up, so he would love this bot of kit!

The only thing better than enjoying beautiful weather on the bike is the knowledge that you can save it for later use! My partner and I have found dynamos to be priced a bit out of our range, but still want to be able to charge our cameras, phones, and possibly even an iPod for sharing tunes in our tent. However, we’ve had to leave all these things at home, as they tend to become dead weight when we can no longer keep them charged! I’ve heard great things about the PoweFilm AA + USB Solar Charger, and from your review it seems perfectly suited to our needs on the road.

    Hello Friedel,

I would like to win the Solar Panel you are giving away. 🙂

I think I’m addicted to bicycle touring, basically all my vacations and saved money I’m spending on bicycle trips,
in May, I’ll do week long trip Austria, Slovakia, Hungary and Czech Republic. In June, two weeks in Japan, in October 3 weeks in Kenya and Tansania.

If I will have ability to charge my gadgets without access to the electricity, I will be able to do camping all the time and it will contribute to save money for my dream to do 2 year around-the-world trip.

    Cheers, your follower

    Kaspars 🙂

    Hi Andrew & Friedel,

my name is Michael and I think I could make good use of the solar panel because I just started my bicycle tour around the world and I currently don’t have a solar panel. I thought I could do with an external battery pack but it seems that won’t really cover it.

In either case, I might be passing through the Netherlands soon so maybe we will get a chance to meet 😀

    Yours, Mike.

    Woohoo, count me in!

I haven’t yet achieved the financial freedom to do any long bike tours, but I sneak in some multi-day bike-camping trips whenever possible.

My favorite trips involve taking the local forest roads, which are maintained just well enough to allow for my bike and BOB trailer. A solar panel would allow me to explore deeper into remote areas while keeping my GPS and other devices charged.

I’ve lived without a car for almost five years, which can be difficult in the USA. Almost every piece of touring equipment I purchase gets used regularly for my day-to-day trips. A solar panel would be a welcome luxury!

OOOo I have been looking for something like this for the last 5 months… I am about to set of on the biggest adventure of my LIFE… cycling 18,000 KMs around Australia with 3 guys.

we are taking 4 HD cameras, 4 HD Go-pros, mp3 players, mobile phones and laptop computers.

I need a Solar panel that is good, but my funds are running real low ( I will be camping in the Bush for about 90% of the time because the hostels are just to expensive.

If I got this … that would be a massive MASSIVE step for the LIFEuphoria group 🙂

we are at the moment down to a small Solar panel (TINY) and some extra batterys… and what better place to use Solar panels than Australia….. plus we are riding for Climate Change so the less we use plugs the better.

This would be LEGENDARY to our trip 🙂 we could even put up some videos in the trip to say a HUGH THANKYOU!!!!

we want to be able to take as many amazing videos (diary videos, animals videos, scenry videos …etc) Pictures and update our website everyweek with as much as possible and this could be an answer to power.

    WWWOOOOOOOOOOO send me message!!

I would love to win the portable solar power unit. I plan on riding GOBA (Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure) this year and it would certainly make it easier to keep the bike computer and phone charged. It would be lovely to win the portable solar power unit as it would come very handy as I float down the Mississippi River this Summer on an Old School Timber Raft… Think what Huckleberry Finn would have floated on.

This gadget will keep my phone and cameras charged so I can share the love of adventure with the world.

    Thanks 🙂 🙂

I’d love to win this solar panel, it is light, folds up small and would power up my android and other small gadgets. I am planning a 3400 mile bike tour with ActiveHereos.Org to raise funds and awareness for military families in need. The tour will begin in Seattle, travel down to San Diego then across to St. Simons, Ga. We will be hitting as many larger cities as possible inbewteen. This panel would see plenty of use, thats for sure!

    Hey guys,

This looks like a great asset on a tour. I live in Thailand and tour as often as I can here and in Laos. I try to utilize campsites, bus stops, and temples as much as possible and would love to use the panel, save some energy and maybe keep me out of a night at a guesthouse. Things I bring that need charging are my cell phone and headlights.

  22. Alan Stanley

I live in a rural area and having power is vitally important. When traveling by bike and not having a dynamo hub it has been more than inconvenient when I try to make a call to be rescued or to rescue another stranded traveler and not have any juice in my cell phone. I’m planning some long bike camping trips this year where there may not be places with power within 50 miles and having a way to keep my cel charged could be a life saver. BTW, I’m 64 and still riding.

I would love to win the Powerfilm Solar Panel.

I’m presently somewhere in the middle stages of planning my first bike tour (a two month trip through the Scottish Highlands, England, Holland, Germany and France) and a little obsessed with the whole idea and have been for about a year. last July I was gifted by my cycling mad grandfather (78) a handmade 1970’s roadbike with Italian parts that was (believe it or not) rescued from a rubbish skip hundreds of miles away in Liverpool. Since then me and my granddad have racked up the miles together but this summer is the time i spend really doing cycling heritage (both the bike and my life-long riding grandfather) justice.

the solar panel would mean i could keep in touch with my ever-worried folks back home with my phone and charge my camera for the spectacular sights i can’t wait to see. It’d be a cherry on top of the already perfect cake that is cycle touring.

    your Sincerely

one very excited first-timer from Scotland

    Hi Andrew & Friedel,

I am a big fan of solar and would love to win the panel. I really get a kick when people ask me things about my bikes. My touring rig always brings folks to ask about how far or where i am going or have been. On my Xtracycle people of course ask ‘What is it?” so have a panel can help build curiosity about biking and Solar adoption. It would be put to good use as well on touring camp outs. I really enjoy being a cycling evangelist here a the Los Angeles area where people drive everywhere.

    Thank you!

Last weekend we took our local Scout troop on a two day cycle expedition in the Brecon Beacons in Wales, they had a fantastic time, it trashed it down with rain, they were covered in mud and soaking wet but grinning like Cheshire cats throughout, they camped in a wet field ate spag bol and slept in their patrol tents.
I use the gps and mapping software on my smart phone for route planning and navigation on such trips, it is invaluable on the move. At present I end up taking a netbook with me to charge my phone which has pretty abysmal battery life. A solar charger would be a great way to charge my phone on the go, allowing me to run the mapping software for longer rather than having to keep switching the phone off and back on all the time to make the most of the battery life.

We would love to win this solar panel all the evidence you heard from my colleagues: Our Partner load electronics: camera, gps, head lamp, etc.

But what sets us apart is our next trip: Morocco cross bike, will think it’s a nice trip, exotic but normal, and you bear a point. What makes it different is that it will be our honeymoon

So we thought it would be a very practical gift for our honeymoon on wheels, as we will need a lot of autonomy:

    * To take millions of photos to share with our family, to get porfin understand our desire to travel.

    * To share the photos with the world through our blog so they can enjoy in some way, with us the journey of our life.

    * To avoid getting lost on these roads because of a poorly marked detour and a GPS without batteries. If we lose we will give reason to those who have told us that a honeymoon should not be done by bike, let us prove them wrong

    * To not ever stay in the dark so as not to accidentally step on any animal, no nail to puncture the tires and no hole through which we can fall off.

For all this would be nice to have a little luck and win that solar panel how well we come.

Thank you very much and good luck to all.

(sorry for my English, I write from Spain and used a online traductor 🙁 )
    ___

Oh, man, would I LOVE to win that solar panel. I’m getting ready to leave on my first serious ride (Cambodia, Laos, Thailand-using your routes, thanks!), and I plan to exhaustively document my successes and failures (of which I anticipate many. Failures, that is. It currently takes me about twenty minutes to change a flat).

I expect to document my trip so exhaustively that my camera and computer will more-or-less constantly be running low, and require recharging. What better way to recharge than with a PowerFilm solar panel?

And, when I return to my other life as a teacher, having the solar panel will allow me to sit in the park and lesson plan for hours, instead of being cooped up in my dank apartment, or in an overpriced and noisy cafe.

I loved my Powermonkey charger which brought an air of the 21st century to my wild-camping adventures across deserts and remoter areas of the Australian outback and New Zealand. That was until a month ago I spotted a Kea bird in Fiordland, New Zealand flying off with it in his bill. Not the morning scenery I was looking for as I munched my stove oatmeal breakfast! If you’ve ever come across a Kea bird you know how pesky and determined they are…opening pannier buckles is an easy walk in the valley for these annoyingly beautiful birds! I’m a firm believer in swings and roundabouts so maybe this is my roundabout chance 🙂

I have just lost a lot of my savings investing in solar energy stocks. It was a beautiful idea I had that would give me independance to travel-cycle. I imagined that each time I would stop to look up at the big burning sun, I would feel all warm inside at the thought that the big burny was also topping up my bank acount so that I could keep pedalling…It was not to be.. Take a look at what happened to shares in solar energy companies and you will see where my savings went:(

I would love one, and would use it. But to be honest none of us NEED one. The alternative is not so bad, turn off the phone except for an hour a day and use a map and compass like we used to.

Here’s hoping the Sun God smiles on me this time..

I would go straight to the point:
I’m going to tour from my home in Poland to Santiago de Compostela in Spain; the budget is ultra low (wild camping, fishing, dumpster diving on occasion – no shame); this gadget will be very useful to charge my phone so I can stay in touch with my mother. Thats it.

Traveling in cycle itself is a environmentally friendly and it will be icing on the cake if I use solar power instead of batteries when I travel. So I would be glad if I win this 🙂

I remember my first tour in 2000 – I was teasing my brother that brought his discman and couple CD’s with his favourite music along.
The second tour we had a cellphone, once a week we had to stay at a hotel, to get it recharged…From 2006 on I have been touring by myself, and now I can’t even imagine a trip without all that energygulping gadgetry: cellphone, GPS-device. Touring has been made that much easier, yet the batteries need some recharging. As summer comes I’m cooking up more and more trips & endevours, and I would very much like that Solar Panel, as it would be a genious leap into cycling independence from an electric socket.

Happy Trails and Best of Regards

I’m preparing for a cross country tour in the USA. Add that to the fact that I am the person who emailed you a couple weeks ago asking if you had ever reviewed a solar charger. It’s like fate! On a more practical note, a solar charger is my approach to keeping all my fancy gadgets going during my trip and I have yet to make the financial investment in one.

    Cheers

A couple of days ago, my friend Julian and I were trying to figure out interesting ways to try to generate energy while riding through the various regions in Spain for a few months. Julian, being the wacky, whimsical, and often irrational fellow, conjured up this elaborate idea of trying to fit a biodiesal generator (or something like that. I often stop listening to his ideas midway) on our bikes and charge what ever appliances we had on us.

I suggested we just fit some solar panels on our bikes. Of course, I am sure in his mind, he was thinking about hauling some giant 40 lb. panel you would put on a house- But something light and foldable would be a perfect fit for hauling through those rough catalonian mountains with some good ol’ rock, or lighting the roads for us when we get stranded in Morocco.

So please, let us use (and review!) this panel before Julian gets any more asinine ideas and tries to drill frame compromising holes in his bike to make them a reality.

My husband and I would love to win the solar panel so that we could actually keep our camera charged. We ran out of power on a self supported tour through the Former Soviet Union and missed some beautiful shots. It would be great to not have that happen on our trip from Wyoming to Chicago this fall!

I’m heading off around Africa next year on my own. I don’t need the charger to help take fantastic pictures with my digital slr, or to blog to my followers on my netbook – it’s to power my kindle and iPod.

It’s my only hope of not going completely loco when I’m alone. I’d hate to torture the people of Namibia with my rendition of “Uptown Girl” due to boredom. 😀

I would like to win the solar charger because we have to charge a lot of devices:
    1. two cell phones
    2. two iPods
    3. one Asus Transformer Prime eee Pad
    4. two camera battery packs
    5. four feet warmer accu cells for cycling in winter
But the most important is: WE DON’T HAVE ELECTRIC POWER ON HIDDEN CAMP SITES IN FRANCE!!!
And: If we don’t have power we can’t update our travel blog; if we have cold feet we won’t be able to cycle and if we don’t cycle there would be no need for a solar charger!!! 🙂

Rediscovering cycling 18 months ago changed the way I travel to work, go out with friends, and enjoy the sights of London. It saves me money, time and keeps me fit. We are heading on our first cycling holiday this summer, camping in Holland and we can’t wait! Our cameras are on our phones so we will need some charge. We respect and love your reviews and guides, keep it going and we will keep on reading. The solar charger will gets lots of use if it is sent to us.

I would love to win the Powerfilm Solar Panel it would be a great asset while pedaling down the road to gather the sun’s rays and charge my cell phone. I go on many bike/camp tours where there is no electric the whole week and by the end of the week I have no cell phone to contact my family and love ones at home. I could also share it with my friends who always like to travel with me so they could keep in touch with their family and pets. Besides it is so cool to recycle and go green it helps clean up Mother Earth!

Hi Guys we really love your travelling 2 site- last year we did our 1st big tour- only 6 weeks but we covered 2500km in this time( and we were quite unfit to start with- but certainly fit by the end, we have a journal of our adventure on crazyguyonabike-a ride from cairns). We rode from Cairns to Cape Tribulation & then down to Brisbane with much of the time on back roads & dirt roads where there was nothing for days at a time. On this trip we travelled with a large 3 panel wagan fold out solar panel, we had done quite a bit of research on this & it was the best we could find buying from Australia, we were trying to use this to put power into a storage battery which we then used to charge everything else. Peter had this strapped across his rear panniers & it just didn’t work & we carried the dead weight for the 2500km. So if there is something else out there that you recomend we would love to give it a test run on our next trip which is coming up soon on June 19th doing 900km’s of dirt on the Mawson trail in Adelaide & then another 1000km’s down through Kangaroo island. This being the middle of winter in Australia would be a great test on the power films robustness & usefulness. We would be happy to then pass it on to someone else who is cycle touring to test it out in another part of the world! Thanks for your site keeps our apetite wetted for the next trip!

Living in Australia , can be frustrating at times. Long distances between battery charges, lots of sun and the overall need to have juice in your cameras phones when cycling long distances, about to head into the hills between Canberra and the east coast for 4 weeks. Lots of hills ,valleys, eucalypts and solitude plus the lack of towns and power outlets.

A solar panel would not only be handy on tour, especially when I am out where plug-ins don’t exist, but it would also be a great conversation starter. One of the things I love about touring is talking to people. I can imagine it now, people walking by, checking it out, and wondering what in the world it is. They do that enough, when the see my bike and gear, but it would be even more if I pulled out a solar panel.

We did two coast to coast last year from MORCOMBE to Bridlington and then from Sunderland to Whithaven UK and ended up spending a fortune on batteries for the GPS. We are coming over to the Netherlads this year in June July and August so there is a chance if i had one of these it would work in the good weather i hope you will be haveing. We are both old age pensioners (67 and 66) SO can not afford to buy one on our very limited budget.

The solar charger would be an excellent example for the bicycle riders on RAGBRAI this summer as well as my son’s Boy Scout troop as we go camping every month (yes, even throughout the winter). On RAGBRAI, there are always shortages of power outlets to recharge cell phones, GPS loggers, cameras, or whatever. If I had the solar charger, I could show folks that there is a green alternative to the typical power outlet while sharing the free power with tons of other riders.

With the Boy Scout troop, I could demonstrate renewable energy while we’re camping in a variety of remote locations. Again, we could charge cell phones, GPS units, or other communication devices. The charger could eliminate the weight and waste of extra batteries typically brought on a trip.

    Thanks for the opportunity!

We, like you, are taking our children more and more out for cycling on overnight trips.
I have DIY’d a number of battery based recharge systems but have been waiting for a decent solar product, in my research, this is it.
We would love to win this for the ability to charge our mobile phones for safety and security as well as our home-made camping lights that make a trip that much more enjoyable for our young children. AND the sun we get here in Australia makes this a common-sense way to go.

Thank you, Dan, Janelle, Emma & Tom

We are keen to wild camp as much as possible, and are in the middle of gear collection mode. Finding a way to charge our gadgets and gizmos has been one of the problems I have been trying to solve. Biketouring + Technology + Work Mobility is everything we do. This little beauty is the one thing on my list that I’ve never had the opportunity to use but have always wanted.

My Partner Sabrina and I are currently spending 2.5 years traveling around the world on our Kona Sutras promoting the potential for work-mobility and the power technology has to give people the freedom to live their lives AND ALSO live out their dreams of traveling. We tour and build software while managing our jobs on the road stopping for 3 days out of 7 to work online with laptops, a router and other mobile gear. We think this kind of freedom should be available to everyone.

A charger like this was always something I wanted to use and couldn’t get. This would be a wonderful addition to what we do and I would be a grateful winner should I be lucky enough for you to even have time to read all these comments let alone pick us to win! :).

We are off to Kashmir & Ladakh, Northern India and then further into the Eastern side of the world – by bike, of course. And since we can hardly save money for the trip itself, we can not afford such useful (but for us luxury) things and so we have rely on the local electronic system while on the road – which is (I guess you know it by yourself) quite unreliable. And anyway, we have to carry at least our cell phones (+ GPS) with us, unless my mom would go crazy I guess 🙂 … okay, she will go crazy anyway when she sees we really mean this journey 😉

Well who wouldn’t want this great littel gadget. This powerfilm charger would be able to record all your great adventures. I think to be able to keep your camra and communications charged up would be sweet.
Your friends and family might not think the same way when they have to look at 1000 odd photos of your trip.
My camra batterie run really low on a LEGOG trip this Easter 2012, I had to stop taken photos from Fort Williams which was a shame just in order to get John O’groats photo.
This superb gadget would have prevented that and kept me green and the footprint, tire track is important, awesome.

I would really like to thank you for sharing with us all,
The chance to win this item by writing on your wall.
So now I will outline my needs and try to make my case,
And paint you all a picture of me, though you do not know my face.
I cycle and recycle and try to make things last,
And ride a 26 year old Peugeot (but do not ride too fast).
My bike and I have seen good times round Ireland through the years,
Exploring lanes and byroads on a limit of 10 gears.
In woods and secluded beaches you’ll find us with a tent,
Or on a lonely mountainside as we make our slow ascent.
We rise at dawn to birdsong, and at the end of every day,
Watch the Connemara sun set over lovely Galway Bay.
To travel around Ireland has my dream and wealth,
Despite some limitations caused by ongoing ill-health.
No longer can I speed along – 100 miles a day,
I now must learn to pace myself and learn another way
To see the things I want to see, and learn to travel wise
And make the most of every trip – each sunset and sunrise.
This piece of kit would help so much on my journey on life’s road,
To keep my phone and batteries charged in each temporary abode.
Instead of notebooks in my bags, to keep a daily log,
I could take a small computer and start to write a blog.
I’ve dreamed a dream for many years to travel far and wide,
To see the many wonders, which therein may abide.
To ride the ancient pathway, the Camino of St. James,
from Galway to Santiago de Compostella of great fame.
Then on to the Alhambra to view Moorish history,
Then to Saintes Maries de la Mer to join the Romani,
To join them as they carry Kali Sara to the sea,
A European version of their Indian history.
And then to follow their journey back to where they first began…
To somewhere far, far in the East, near glorious Rajastan.
The journey of a lifetime is now within my reach,
I’ve learned a lot from all you write – the skills you so well teach.
This charger would so help me, as I travel on this way
To share the story as I ride – the highlights of each day.
To help inspire others, as you have done for me,
To pack their bikes and start to ride beyond the seventh sea.
So now, to you, I’ve made my case, along with all the rest.
It may not be the winner, but I have done my best.
So all that’s left is to say is may your road be often flat,
and when it is not, as we say in Ireland, “Go n-éirí an bóthar leat”!

My partner, Carolyn, and I are currently recording and cataloging cycle touring routes in Poland. Last year we covered about 1200km of routes in Central and Eastern Poland using inaccurate local maps, iPhone, iPad and good intuition. Cycle touring resources are scarce in this part of the world, but the riding is great and costs are low for European standards. We want to make it more available to other folks. Last year it was extremely difficult to keep everything charged while riding through areas where one may or may not have access to electricity. Having a tool like the Powerfilm Panel would greatly speed our travel and recording of information and reduce side trips to find electricity. This year we plan to utilize a GPS recorder, iPad, iPhone and a DSLR. Too much to simply charge on a dyno. My partner, Carolyn, and I are currently recording and cataloging cycle touring routes in Poland. Last year we covered about 1200km of routes in Central and Western Poland using inaccurate local maps, iPhone, iPad and good intuition. We will be happy to return feedback, pics of our exploits featuring the Powerfilm, reviews, travel/usage tips etc… and even go one better: after using the Powerfilm for one year we will do exactly what you are doing here and give it away via our blog one another deserving cycle tourist.

As a veteran cycle tourist in the lucky country with 5 trips across Australia already done and planning to ride all the way around Australia in 2013, I know the power of the sun is a great add to a trip when combined with this Power Film solar charger

    Hi Friedel and Andrew!

I’m leaving at the end of May for a 6-month around-Europe solo tour. Really around Europe since I will start in southern France and moving clockwise to Turkey by way of Norway.

At this point, I will evaluate the next leg of my journey.

Solar panels were definitely the order of the day for me and I had to check the date twice on the blog because I couldn’t believe my good fortune that you were offering this up just as I am getting my gear together for the trip.

Great info and podcasts on your blog. I’m just starting to put together my blog before leaving.

    Cheers!

    Your fellow Canuck,

    François

during a recent trip in sri lanka where everyone just tells you to call them when you are nearby to give you directions (and i quickly got tired of arguing with them)
i ran out of battery on my mobile, which was also my gps.
on that particular road people weren’t too kind
and made me feel like there was nothing worse than the humiliation of being reduced to begging for something so basic
which they refused to me even when i offered to pay
in the end, it almost cost me my life when it got dark on me and a pack of men very intent on hurting me (the solo female cyclist) appeared out of nowhere
that was my first day of my cycling tour when i learnt the hard way my mobile’s battery life didn’t last as long with the local sim card as i does at home
i then spent the rest of the trip playing around with the (wifi/ringer/etc) on/off trying to save on energy and missing calls from people/hotels that needed me to confirm something or other, were checking up on me…
i so wish to have this solar panel so i don’t have to relive that experience again on my next trip & actually enjoy it

Cycle touring equates to great freedom,
witnessing life up close from such travel,
but the needs of my iPod and gadgets,
beg for a Powerfilm Solar Panel.
The new friendships to make are abundant,
with other languages troubling to handle,
but this task is made simpler by my lap top,
and thanks to your handy solar panel.
    Bicycle trips are total adventures,
as I’m clad in shorts, helmet, and flannel,
panniers to the brim with my equipment,
and adorned by a Powerfilm Panel!

Greetings friends and bicycle lovers 🙂

We are a couple of youngsters that love touring with our two-wheel pets and a little gem like this would make all the difference on the road.
We are big fans of everything environment friendly, and there is nothing like powering up on solar energy.
We would be thrilled to test it out on our Tuscany tour this summer!

Failing this, I’ll settle for your solar panel to put on my recumbent bicycle so that I can update my loyal facebook army when my journeys take me where there is no free Mcdonalds wifi.

    Hello bike loving friends,

Well, my boyfriend and I are preparing for our first bike touring adventure: one month in Mongolia, and we realized that we’ll definitely need to buy a solar panel, to charge our camera and GPS (no, we really don’t need to update our Facebook while on the road!!). So, if we can get one for free, that’s really cool!!
    Thanks anyways!

It would be so great to win the Powerfilm Solar Panel. My friend Maria and I are going on Tour de Sustainability (http://tourdesustainability.org/) in less than a month. It is our three-month cycling journey across Canada throughout which we will be filming our adventure and our conversations with local individuals about their actions to move towards sustainability. To achieve this we will have a couple of cameras and a small laptop with us so we can keep everyone updated on our discoveries. And, of course, gadgets need charging and what a better and more sustainable way than to harvest the rays of the sun to keep our tour on the go.
    Happy cycling,

    Hi Andrew/Friedel,

I’ve been looking for a solar solution to my trip departing in coming June. the Power Film and the A-Solar Power Bag are both on my list and I’m going to choose which one to use in my trip.

My trip will start right off my home town Macau in East Asia. Head north to Mainland China and then all the way west to Cabo da Roca, Portugal. Here’s the route http://g.co/maps/z4zp2.

I expect frequent use of the Power Film to power my devices like GPS, Smartphone, 3G Modem. And I also expect putting a harder test on the Power Film when I’m in Central Asia and Iran.

    Thanks for reading my comment!

    Thanks!

I am a 21 year old Biochem/Chem student at the University of Victoria and I am leaving for my first bike tour across Canada next week (!!) and this solar panel would be a very awesome thing to have along to charge my phone (so my mother can always get a hold of me! Ha ha) and so I can always listen to great tunes.

As a student, money is a bit tight, but I’ve been saving up for this trip for a while, and always considered buying something such as a solar panel, but it never really worked its way into the budget!

Hi! I and my Esteemed Colleague, Anya, are going to cycle across Canada this summer. Since our route lies North of the 49th parallel, we’ll be enjoying 15-16 hours of sunlight for much of our 3-month venture. It would be a shame to let it go to waste! This precious resource would go towards powering our computer, phone, bike lights (if we should need them… what with the long days), and most importantly our Video Camera. Our project is to meet regular people and collect/film conversations about sustainability. I’d like to close with, everything you learned about Canadians by watching South Park is totally 100% true.

My partener and i are planning a tour from UK to Oz. We have opted for one dynamo hub between us as i am so much slower that if i had a hub on my bike the extra resistance would mean i never catch up. I am concerned as to whether one hub will be sufficent to power up all of our devices.

I am ashamed to admit that I only really became concerned about my carbon footprint and living a more eco friendly life after I moved to Netherlands. As I discovered bicycle commuting and later bicycle touring it struck me that that it really is something that anyone can do regardless of his or her circumstances. With a solar battery charger I can further cut down my eco footprint on bicycle tours this year (North Sea route along Denmark’s coastline). Also, as opposed to a hub dynamo I can also use it to charge my smart phone and rechargeable bicycle lights when I am not on a tour. With a bright summer predicted this year I am sure with a solar charger I can contribute that tiny bit more to the environment.
    Cheers,

Well, I’m electrically charged, but my friendly touring buddies (i.e. updated Tracphone, updated iPad, updated GPS, updated IPOD) need power. My Surly Long Haul trucker, the steel horse, can only do so much with the generator hub so….I really deserve the solar panel. What you think? YES!

  169. Hristo Pantaleev
    28th April 2012 at 10:32 am #

Well, the reason is very simple: a source of free energy. At my trip at 2009 I just used 3 garden solar lamps in a transparent plastic box. But it is not so comfortable. With solar charger I can charge my batteries for the camera, to use it for a light in the tent (I travel alone and I like to read book at the evening in the tent or to write in my diary)and to listen my old MP3-player without shopping a single used batteries (it is not so good for environment). This solar charger saves money – no need a camping for just charging your mobile phone or charge batteries for the camera.
Well, a friend told me that I can use my dinamo (6V), selfmade. And it is difficult for me.

If nothing else, I should win for more pathetic entry. I am old and fat, but my daily commute has helped me deal with overwhelming stress the last EIGHT years. As you can find, on my open FB page, I have been avoiding foreclosure from Citi Bank over money they now admit THEY OWE ME! During this time, a son returned from Iraq needing hospitalization (after a CAMPUS shooting no less), our home burned, and my youngest just returned from deployment last year.

I have been forced to change careers to protect my sanity. Extended weekend bike camping getaways (and an occassional romantic weekend w/the wife) are the only “vacations” I have had in 30 years (changing that this year). Last year’s trip across Illinois would have been even more enjoyable had I a mobile charger (btw, you would love The Hennepin Canal trail across Illinois).

Not only I lived now almost 4 years on bicycle, before I lived for many years without power supply. Now I tried to charge different Accus on dynamo, but it didn’t work properly. Solar charging is a smart way, but expensive. Winning is the only option, I guess. Get it!

However I have made a device which uses Solar and own bike dynamo to charge all my devices (GPS, MP3, Phones, and Laptop) Trip live shared while in Sweden!

Thanks for this glorious article. One more thing to mention is that many digital cameras arrive equipped with some sort of zoom lens that enables more or less of any scene to get included by means of ‘zooming’ in and out. These changes in target length tend to be reflected inside viewfinder and on large display screen at the back of the particular camera.

It was a seven-year, $68 million deal that left tons of guaranteed money on the table and oddly tied much of it to hard-to-reach incentives that Williams never attained.
