Win A Spot On Icebreaker’s Test Team!

Icebreaker Cycling GearAnnouncing a great contest: the chance to win awesome Icebreaker merino wool cycling clothing, from their new 2011 range!

It’s no secret that we adore Icebreaker’s merino wool clothing. We wore it extensively during our world cycling trip, and found it incredibly comfortable and durable (see our recent review of Icebreaker socks).

Now, you can win Icebreaker gear from their new bike-specific range of clothing. Just leave a comment below to get a chance to test the new gear, and give us your impressions of it.

We’re giving away Icebreaker tops, developed just for cyclists. There are 4 tops to win (2 for men and 2 for women) and 2 runners-up will win an Icebreaker sock package.

4942960306_4aeca9a0c0_oTrust us – this is a great prize! We tested out the tops during our bike tour through Denmark and – just like the rest of our Icebreaker gear – we love them.

The fitted style looks good. Reflective detailing helps with visibility in low light, and there are handy pockets for things like keys and wallets.

As with all Icebreaker gear, the clothing is exceptionally good at resisting odour, which means you can easily wear it several days in a row without washing.

Want to win? Here’s what to do:

  • Leave a comment below. Tell us why you want to be a tester!
  • Earn bonus points: Follow @travellingtwo on Twitter, and Tweet about this contest with the URL http://bit.ly/winicebreakergear (tell us your Twitter name when you comment below, so we know you’ve done this)
  • Be willing to give feedback on the gear, and send a photo, after a month of testing

Good luck! The deadline for entries is 5pm (European time) on October 7th. We’ll announce the winners on October 8th.

    Hi there,

Congratulations for the website, it’s an amazing source of information and it really helped us to organize our first bike tour to the Netherlands last summer.

It would be great testing the Icebreaker merino wool cycling clothing as I am going to do some touring in the South of the UK and I will need all the technical gear I can! I will definitely provide feedback after some rides as well as photos.

I have tweeted about this contest on Twitter (alexamine) as well as on Facebook.

    Cheers,

    Alex

Next year I’m cycling John O’Groats to Land’s End in the UK, and it be great to have some Icebreaker jerseys to wear. In the build-up I’m doing a lot of cycling on Dartmoor, which can be very bleak & desolate, but is intensely gorgeous just the same. In fact, it is one of my favourite places in the world!

I’ve been catching tips from you guys to help me prepare – thanks for a great site.

As an year-round cyclist, I cycle no matter what the weather, so good gear is important. I’ve learnt much by trial and error, including purchasing a pair of gloves supposedly for skiing – what a disaster they were! Leaking when there is only slight moisture about!

I’ve re-tweeted under my Twitter name, WilliamNB.

    Thanks for the contest!

    Hi Friedel,

This contest is definitely great … I’d love to have some extra Icebreaker gear, after having worn two shirts during my travels through New Zealand (two month cycle tour). But I’d love to test out the latest Icebreaker layers, they’re cool!

would love to test out the icebreaker gear! cotton doesn’t dry fast enough and synthetics are… kinda smelly.

i’ve heard great things about wool (mostly from you guys), but I’m “on the fence” about trying them since they are a bit cost-prohibitive (i’m a student).

we’ve started line-drying our clothes, so I’m very curious if wool does better than cotton in that aspect as well! =)

I have heard really good things about Iceabreaker, but I’ve not had the opportunity to try any of their gear. I ♥ merino wool. It’s getting dark and cool out, and I know a nice layer of merino will help keep the weather at bay while riding both for pleasure and for transport this winter. Would be more than willing to give my thoughts on the top. Tweet from Nelinde

As I’m sitting here writing this comment I’m wearing my much loved icebreaker zip polo bought many years ago. Hardly a week (well really a day) goes by without me putting it on. Hiking in the bush, cycle touring, a trip into town or the pub, it suits all occasions. I would love to add some new Icebreaker clothes to my collection so that my friends stop hassling me about always wearing my icebreaker zip polo.
I would be more than happy to try the products for a month and provide feedback and photos!

    Hi there,
we are a cycling family with two children (2 and 5 years old). We started travelling by bike 15 years ago and now we are preparing our fifth bike trip with the children, from Auckland to Queenstown (New Zealand), November 2010-January 2011.
We would like to test the Icebreaker clothes in the same place where they are made. We have done some other test before (Chariot, Dahon, Pilen, Trail-gator, FollowMe). You can read them in our web site:

Hallo. I would very much appreciate the chance to get to test out some cycling-motivated merino kit! When I lived in the UK it was very popular but here in Austria it doesn’t seem to have hit the shops yet and all my UK-bought merino tops are slowly becoming more holes than cloth. I’m setting off in a few months on a long trip through America and am just starting to buy all the extra kit I need, merino tops are on my list for the cold mornings but until now I hadn’t seen any especially made for biking. I’ve hosted various cyclists through the warmshowers site and have noticed that the ones I’ve had to suggest a shower to tend to be those in synthetics…

Forgot to say, I would be more than willing to give feedbakck and a review, with updates on the feedback as a “longetivity” test (which seems to be a constant theme with merino kit)

Hi!I’m a big fan of Merino gear. I never quite understood how the sports industry gets away with all those synthetic materials when some natural ones are superior on so many levels.

I use Merino gear in my 30 mile daily commute in the Netherlands, famous for it’s changing weather. I also enjoy it when I travel with my bike, because it doesn’t stink and it looks good 🙂

I’d love a change to test some Icebreaker and blog about it.

I would love to test some Icebreaker cycling gear because I can’t find anyone who sells it in Australia. People I know with the Icebreaker clothing rave about them, so I want to know what the fuss is about and merino wool is such a great fabric for a cycling jersey.

    Hi
I loved reading your tour write up of Denmark – I think we cycled the same route as you did but in reverse, back in July using the nature sites for wild camping, but we went up route 1 and then down route 3, picking up route 6 and then 9 before finding route 1 again at the German boarder.

I am a big Icebreaker fan, having some of their kit for my mountaineering and the coastal short coat from several years ago which is still going strong.
I commute daily in all weathers to work (round trip is 1.5 hours) and get out on Sundays with my husband as well. I already use some of that same mountaineering kit to add under my cycling kit when the weather gets colder. It has just started to turn cold enough for summer kit not to be warm enough at 6:45 in the morning, but winter kit is then too warm in the evenings sysling home.
We are also due to go on 2 cycling tours in the near future, in October and December, both to Scotland, so any cycling kit would be well tested and I am more than happy to write a review.
    thanks
    Emma

I am biking my son (11) too and fro from school every day as the road he needs to take, is pretty much trafficated.

If winter is going to be like last year, it would be a beautiful gift for my son to have a nice Merino top (small please), so he has no excuse to take the bus.

And for sure, he will give feedback, as woolen shirts that itch all the time, will definitely not be used by him.

I, in the meantime, I will use my thin Icebreaker hat, to keep my gray hair warm under my helmet.

Greetings from a sunny day in Denmark, Hans

To put it quite simple, there’s hardly a better environment to test the Icebreaker gear than the cold went and windy North of England this time of year. Weather is quickly turning horrid and we’re heading for another 6 months of this.
I cycle to work and back (12 miles round trip) everyday and I also do a long 70-100 miles tour every Sunday with the British CTC. Allowing me to test the gear would give an honest opinion for both commuter (short very early mornings and evenings rides) as well as long distance use (for the long day tours).
I have also tested sponsored gear before for Brooks, Schwalbe, Cliff Bars and Altura as part of my RideAcross.eu tour (a charity ride England To Romania that we did this summer).
Thank you for the opportunity to apply and hope to prove useful to you and the community.

    Keep up the good work.

I think all of you cycling in UK or Europe, you are sissies. Where’s the challenge?
I’ll go on a tour to Central Asia on November, and even thinking about it makes me so nervous I piss in my pants. I might not even come back alive.
Possible dangers could be snow storms on mountain passes or highway robbery, long distances without water (or snow). You name it!
I’ll quit my rent contract, sell most of my possessions, or give away or lend some stuff to friends. When I go I have only the stuff I really need on my long cargo bike. Merino-wool clothes would be very practical, because they won’t start to smell. I can have a bath in Kyrgystan maybe once in a four days.

We have been using merino wool over the last year. From cheap Aldi stuff to more expensive Ground Effect tops. The more we use it the more stuff we get that is merino. Use it cycling and as everyday wear.

We are heading out to Oz and Nz next week for a two month tour. Our merino gear is already ready and packed, as we do not want to forget it.

Good luck to the winners, you will never regret getting merino gear.

I’m sure I’m not in the running as I’m already a huge icebreaker fan! (I even cheat and wear them to work under a suit jacket)

The real reason I never ride my bike is because all the ice breaker I currently have is too short. And it’s cold here! Like BRRR up the back kind of cold 🙁

I’ve never been that excited about “technical” gear. I’ve always been a simple cotton T-shirts and shorts kind of guy. However, I do remember one time when I was working at a ski resort in the Rockies, I splurged on a set of polypropylene long underwear.

The pitch was that this stuff would keep you extremely warm, would wick away moisture from your body, and not get smelly. I was skeptical, but I have to say that that polypro gear was amazing. It did everything it was supposed to and kept me toasty warm in minus-thirty and minus-forty degree temperatures. It was great stuff. It makes me curious whether Merino wool cycling gear could also make a believer out of me.

Much as I love a simple cotton T-shirt, my time here in Taiwan has made me aware of just how hot a cotton T-shirt can be. And for a cycling tour, carrying enough T-shirts to get you to the next wash day can make a heavy load! Maybe it’s time to try some technical cycling gear and see how it would fit in to my next tour.

    Thanks!

    Doug

I am 55 and I cannot exercise in Winter. Just too cold if it is below 40F here in the North East. But, I would like to break that pattern and I may be able to do so with the help of the Icebreaker woolen garments I would test.

Even though I started cycle touring 2 years ago, I haven’t bought any cycling clothes yet. 2 years ago I didn’t even have a bicycle, not to mention any other cycling gear. On my first cycling trip in Sweden I felt like an amateur who just learned how to ride a bike, so I thought I’d look stupid in a professional cycling top and pants. Then, before my 7 weeks long trip in Norway this summer, I thought maybe it was time to try (being still an amateur:) – but there were so many other things to buy and organize that I ended up with my casual cotton clothes again. And it was a mistake. Of course it’s not superb clothes that make your trip wonderful, but they can make it more pleasant, comfortable and – less smelly!
I can’t decide where to go next year – the Alps seem most appealing, but maybe Ireland & Scotland, Italy, or maybe somewhere far away from Europe? Wherever I go, I’d love to have Icebreaker’s merino wool cycling clothing. Earlier, I could test them while cycling in Poland to extoll it here:)

I’m not on Twitter, but I shared your contest on facebook:)

My name is Yevgeniy but people call me Z. 1st off let me say what a great site you guys have – love the info on here and your updates on FB. I live in US but currently am travelling around the world. At this moment, I am staying in S. Africa having travelled over 6 months via varrious paublic transport through Middle East, Central Asia, and N. Africa. In these travels I came to decision to travel across Africa from south to north by cycling. I think because of various terrain and the more harsher, but more rewarding cycling travels in this magnificently beautiful continent, I shall be able to trully test the 2 tops or the socks to see if they will live up to the rugged cycling adventures where even the western concept of time does not exist and life is at simplistic bliss, and some troublesome realities of life! Though I must warn you, I will probably push the limits of these clothing gear to their max – so be warned just in case! Either way, much love – wish you, and all the others … God’s speed! ~ Your humble servant, Yevgeniy Pavlovich Zhupikov

    Hi guys,

Having never entered your contests, I just couldn’t resist the opportunity to try on some Merino Wool Socks. My friend Chris Roach had them when we were touring in Asia together but I had to opt for Nike rip offs that I found in the local market. My feet were freezing by the time I got to China, and he lent them to me for a little while, what a difference it made during the night!

Now that I am living off the land in North Devon, I still can’t justify the expense of merino wool. But wouldn’t they feel lovely inside my purple wellie boots! And of course when I do go on tour later in the year I’m sure some Icebraker gear would come in handy.

Thanks for the opportunity to enter and keep up the great work!

Oh, Icebreaker! After three-six months cycling wearing several t-shirts they started developing small holes like polka dots. After sewing them up for several months we decided to send them back to Icebreaker to get their opinion. They said it was just normal wear and tear from being out in the sun for long periods. That is ok I guess (I assumed they would last one year at least), although the part that annoyed me was when they refused to send our clothes back to us while we were on in tour in the arctic. Icebreaker is expensive and market their clothes as set for epic adventures, but I think in reality their ideal market is weekend adventurers from time to time.
Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoyed my Icebreaker clothes, their comfort, lack of stench, feel against the skin, but don’t assume they’ll have a long lifespan. Maybe the new models are more durable? I highly doubt I will win this competition, but if I did I could give an interesting comparison as I’m about to head off on a 6 month cycle trip down the south of the US & Mexico…
Great site guys, love the podcasts 🙂

We had a great 5 weeks cycling through the Baltic States in May and June. The only downsides were some very wet days and on our “must do next time” is to get some way to waterproof our feet on wet rides. I’d tried plastic bags and booties were next to try till we saw the Icebreaker socks on the last news letter. We would love to try them and would report on how they perform. Vicky is planning an East Coast trip with out Bicycle Users Group while I’m in Nepal next month then we do a trip around Bruny Island with another Warmshowers couple, thnks for the intro to the network. I love a good sock! In my fantasy land I have an oak box, lined with velvet that contains my perfect pair: one that don’t ride down into your feet so you have to keep pulling them up, (which usually rule out normal sport socks), one that keeps the tootsies warm even though they’re poking out the end of your body like all the time, one that you don’t necessarily have to clean everyday (only taking 3 on tour I can’t be doing with constant domesticity) and finally one that is not so thick that your toes can’t move inside your boot. Does this perfect pair exist? Perhaps, but you’ll have to send me the Icebreakers for me to find this perfection!
Oh, and the tops will do nicely too.
    Lovingyourworkthankyou.

I hammer my kit in all conditions so if the ram can handle living, training and exploring with me it can handle most anything, if in doubt ask my wife! I’ve used all manner of technical kit over the years and to date have found Icebreaker to be the best, although recently i have been a little disheartened as holes have started to appear in some of my tops. This is a perfect opportunity to reassure me and the rest of the world that Icebreaker is unbreakable. Me, my wife and six month old daughter cycle and run in all conditions and are soon planning to take on the world so this could be a match made in pure New Zealand Merino.

    Hey Friedel and Andrew!
I’ve always cycled with half-way ordinary gear. I remember freezing my hands and feet (despite wearing two pairs of socks, and, hahah, two pairs of gloves!) on the ride from Lake Superior Provincial Park to Wawa. In May. You’d think it would be summer, but it was frigid and even had snowed overnight.
I’d love to try some Icebreaker gear: My summer plans involve a field research expedition to the arctic (if I can swing it!!), sadly not by bike, but after that I hope to be cycling around the UK before my master’s starts. And by the UK, ideally I’m talking about the Scotland highlands! Aaah! such beauty. 🙂 Somehow I think I prefer the cold landscape to the hot one.
    Best wishes,
    Geoff

    Hey Guys,

Just getting into cycle touring, so greetings from an excited newbie – yep, you are right, absolutely the best way to travel! This site, plus others I found thru it have been a great encouragement. Now Im hooked – so thanks everyone! Done a couple of tours this summer here in Japan where I am based and cant wait to get some more time off to do more.

But autumn approaches and the mountain passes will freeze up soon. So I need warmth with performance – is Icebreaker the answer? Let me find out!

From my experiences of backcountry snowshoeing and snowboarding, I second the advantages of wool over synthetics. But I also had the same disappointing wear & tear with my smartwool socks.

You can believe I will put any Icebreaker to the test over the next few months – biking, hiking and boarding …bring it on!

Hi, I have heard great things about Icebreaker kit. Yesterday I bought a pair of Merino socks (last of the big spenders). I am wearing them on a long distance walk next week. I would love to be a tester to try some of your other gear to find out for myself how good it is. By the end of next week I will be an expert in how your socks perform. I am also a mountain biker and hillwalker and always willing to try new products. Perhaps one day I will pluck up the courage to give travelling round the world a try. All the best, you are an inspiration to both the active and the inactive armchair explorers.

Since your review of Icebreaker socks, I’ve really been wanting a wool top. With no income, I haven’t been able to justify the cost even though I expect the added comfort during cold weather would be worth it. If I’m selected as one of the testers, that would be great.

I am a young cyclist — i.e. lacking money :)– planning a two month ultralight wild-camping cycle tour of France and Spain. i will be riding a bamboo fixed gear that i built myself, outfitted with homemade mudguards, racks and panniers. Fixed gear means that there will be plenty of high-output testing, and wild-camping every night will be a good test of durability.

This website has been a great help planning my tour, and i would love a chance to contribute some quality content to the site!

Oh, and I am also going to be working the ski season in the alps, which is another great testing opportunity.

    Thanks,

My husband and I plan to continue toting our 1 year old son in his Chariot bike trailer over the winter months. Now that we have a bike carrier, we can expand our range as we ease into touring with our son. The damp, wet and brisk conditions would be well suited for testing the ability of Icebreaker clothes to breathe and wick. Please let us be your guinea pigs! 🙂 Eagerly- Rebecca and Chris

Living as I do in Atlantic Canada, I’m always searching for ways to keep warm. The winds off the ocean have absolutely no respect and manage to penetrate most clothing. I think Icebreaker clothing would be perfect in this climate. I am a vocal promoter of products I like and will make sure all my friends know about Icebreaker gear.

It’s cold in the Fall, Winter, and Summer as I navigate my 26 year old Schwinn through the icy hills of Bethlehem and the rest of the Lehigh Valley. However, as a tester for this Icebreaker gear, I’ll be making a couple of statements about bicycling through Bethlehem’s icy streets: 1 less car for the road and hey this great bicycle kit is keeping me warm.

Here in Montreal the leaves are turning yellow and red, the days are getting short, it’s getting cool, humid and a bit rainy, and I just hate to see the cycling season drawing to a close. This is the PERFECT time to win and trial your Icebreaker cycling tops. Love your site!!

I live in North Dakota, and I wear a wool base layer everyday around this time of year through april! I am very active, I don’t own a car so I bike everywhere, I hike a lot and race cyclo-cross. I would heavily use the tops or the socks!

Here’s my shot. I love to ride my bike – I ride in wool most of the time. I cyclocamp and just about live in it. I’ve only got Smartwool stuff right now. read your info on Icebreaker being more durable and I’m heading out on a North American tour this coming spring… I want to check it out.

I’ve heard nothing but good things about Icebreaker and Merino wool. Having spent 9 years living in Phoenix, Arizona where cold weather cycling means putting on a thicker t-shirt, I’m still adjusting to the Colorado Rockies and months of winter.

Anyway, keep up the good work and would love to hear you do another podcast.

I absolutely love my merino wool clothing. I’ve worn the same Howie’s long-sleeved top nearly every day for the past four months on tour and can testify that merino really can be worn for days on end without smelling, no deodorant required! Unfortunately the top is now flapping around as I’ve lost weight and it’s too big and I’ve had a few ocassions where the backdraft from a truck has actually lifted it half way up my back! I’d love to try out a closer fitting, cycling specific version. I’ve got plenty more touring planned in the year ahead so it would get a good test.

I’m a die hard touring cyclist in my mid-50’s whose friends have lots of disposable income and purchase high quality, high value products. The best season for benefit touring is upon us here in the SF Bay area. I’d love to be able to test the Icebreaker gear during the Tour d’ Africa trip starting January 16, 2011 and ending May 15. I’ll be riding almost 8000 miles from Cairo to Capetown South Africa, going through all kinds of different weather conditions, dirt, sand storms, pouring rain, intense sun, and even cold conditions in South Africa. I think the ride would be an excellent opportunity to test and report on how the clothing holds up under the most extreme conditions. I will be writing a daily online journal during the trip on http://www.crazyguyonabike.com. I have used that site for all my bike touring trips through Asia and the US.

Hi, have just had a look at the gear on Icebreakers website. As a keen cyclist i’m always looking for the best gear I can which uses the best materials available so having the chance to wear something new on the market and pass on my opinion would be pretty cool. I remember doing this over 10 years ago for a golf waterproof manufacturer and the comments I made helped shape the design of the final product that went on sale.

Icebreaker would be stellar gear for my cyclocommute through the harsh Cleveland, Ohio winter. Merino wool counteracts the frigid wind gusts coming off Lake Erie. For about 6 months a year, biking in the Cleve is a grey-white nightmare, but this jacket and socks would make it feel like a warm cup of cocoa and smoldering logs in the fireplace!

The obvious reason why anybody wants to be a tester is for the free gear. Besides that, I want to become a tester because I am tired of watching my girlfriend wear ice breaker gear (shirts/sweaters/socks) while I have normal cotton t-shirts. I too, want to parade around everywhere with an icebreaker shirt.

Keep up with the great website!

    Hey guys,

This contest sounds sweet, though if you have already tested Icebreaker’s newline I don’t really know how I could test it any better 🙂
However, as someone who has cycled across SE Asia, I know the importance of great gear that works for each individual, and given my ability to stink up SmartWool’s socks, it would be awesome to try an alternate brand.
I’ll be backpacking through Central and South America with my wife starting soon, so we’d definitely be able to test the durability of any product!
No twitter, but linked to this page on Facebook – best I can do 🙂

Thanks for running such an informative website,

I’d love to test out some Ice Breaker products… although I’m not sure I’d be the best tester since there’s really no ice in Los Angeles (where it’s supposed to be pushing up and over 100F this weekend). I would love to test the Icebreaker gear. I am planning to commute here in Kentucky throughout the winter this year and think the wool may be the best clothing to do so. I’ll do anything to win some Icebreaker. Love the gear. Being a kiwi I’ve grown up with Icebreaker and it’s been amazing to follow the development of the brand and the gear. Makes you proud to be a kiwi when you look at what they have achieved for NZ and the NZ Merino growers. A specialist bike range would complete my Icebreaker wardrobe and I would be honoured to be a test pilot for the range. If it will work in Christchurch (earthquake capital of NZ) it will work anywhere. Cheers

This is my first all-weather cycling year in freezing Detroit, Michigan. We don’t get a lot of year-round cyclists here, and I am trying to convince my colleagues at the city’s Department of Transportation that it can be done (even when we have piles of snow outside). To do this I need the right equipment..which I don’t currently have, and is expensive for my college budget.

If I can prove to them that with the right gear and supplies, even a Detroiter can bike year round, maybe they will start realizing that Bikes on Buses, Bikes on Light Rail, Bike Lanes and other amenities for cyclists should be on the planning table.

In short: Detroit, “The Motor City” is still hostile to cyclists. If you can help me turn this around for my city by letting me get out on the road in the fall and winter, I will reward you with amazing, detailed reviews and photos.

Hey guys, Firstly I have to say your website rocks. It has given me so many great ideas and tips as I plan my upcoming journey.

Early next year I will be cycling from London to New Zealand on what will prove to be an adventure of a life time. I have done nothing like this before but I thought “we only live once, what the heck”

It would be amazing to try out some Icebreaker clothing when I leave London in Feb. It will be pretty damn chilly at the time so to head back to NZ (I am a kiwi boy) wearing a product made from quality New Zealand Merino Wool would be pretty damn cool 🙂

    Live the dream 🙂

YES i am interested in testing gear, because i am a bit of a gear nut , i spend a lot of time checking out shops and websites for gear that works, i am keen hillwalker, and cyclo-camper, i have used merino wool tops on my tour from bordeaux to nice , and found them ideal, so i love to test more gear on my next trip, nice to rome,, i’ll aslo like to test gear on my daily commute, and my charity cycles,as i live in ireland , and as the weather is so changeable, as bob hope says, we get all the four seasons in one day, its essential to have the right gear, so i’m the man for testing

My boyfriend Ned and I are currently cycling from Canada to South America. We are visiting farms along the way to learn about sustainable food projects, blogging about our experiences as we go. We’re in Oregon, USA at the moment. As we’re combining cycling with physical labour on farms we’d love to test some icebreaker gear. We don’t have easy access to do our laundry so we could put the non-smelliness to the test, plus our varied physical activities in lots of different climates – from very hot to very cold – might be interesting too!

Just finished a week long tour of the Adirondack Mtns. in NY. The weather forecast called for nice sunny days all week but on day 3 I hit rain, wind and cold temps in the high peaks area. I could have really used some gear like the Icebreaker merino wool base layers. As luck would have it, the mechanical problems I had were on the days with the worst weather so I was working on the trike in the cold rain and wind knowing next time better clothes would be needed. I’d love to try out the Icebreaker gear as I am gearing up for a cross-country tour in 2011. A detailed assesment would be provided on durability, comfort etc.

Living here in Tassie I’d like to test these tops in a range of riding conditions, from the hotter days of summer (to really test out their odour resistant properties) to the cooler (icy!) rides in winter.
In our springtime and autumn a fine day can quickly change too, so a fabric that stays warm even when wet would be excellent.

    Hello!

My husband and I are selling our house (and everything else) and leaving for a world bike tour in 1,496 days! All we get to keep is what we can carry.

We both commute to work on our bikes and are testing out our gear now so we have the best stuff when we go. We live in NH so it gets might cold on the ride to work! If I am late for work and I have alot to carry (I do presentations in different schools) I often have freezing hands and feet but a sweaty body. I then have to do my “superman impression” and duck into a bathroom to wash up and change into my presentation clothes. I would be GREAT to dress correctly on my commuting and touring trips!!!!!

I practically LIVE on my bike. If I’m not travelling or touring, I’m commuting to and from work, going shopping, going to the movies or visiting friends, or just plain going out for ride!
Some years ago I bought a car, and sold it again within a few months because it was going mouldy in the driveway! I confess that recently I’ve again gone over to the dark side, and bought another car, but that’s mainly so I can take a kayak places.
If you want cycle-designed Icebreaker clothing tested, I’ll wear it 6 days a week; then you’ll know what its anti-odour properties are like! Cycling rules — OK!

My partner and I am currently planning our cycle trip on our bamboo bikes from London to Sydney, Australia. There is no doubt we will be taking merino to cope with all weather situations while keeping our kit to a minimum. We considered bamboo clothing for the cute factor, but it really doesn’t cut compared to the merino gear we have been trialling. It would be brilliant to win the competition and win some gear while saving for our journey. To be frank we will be travelling in icebreaker regardless as have not found any other brand of merino products that can give the technical attributes and the quality of the ice breaker products we have worn to date. Can’t wait to slip into the cycle gear.

I promise not to take any shower to check if it´s really not smelly! As always pleasure to follow you up with new posts… as you are giving away Icebreaker I have a nice story to share.

Couple weeks ago I meet up & hosted girl on bike, Alya from London. We met up via another biker, Rick Gunn. After some nice hours of chatting about this and that, also about the trip I did, I showed her couple of my things super worn out… As we talked about all the gear today I mentioned Icebreaker brand as I know some people love to use it (rob above), but I never had a chance to have my own (I used Craft a lot). As we are simmilar size, in a second she started laughing and brought to me a long sleeve shirt. It was Icebreaker. It was exactly my size and the colours I would choose. Alya said present for you. It was my little mid year Christmas gift.

So I hope and wish whoever got it now to be as happy and suprized as I was that evening and enjoying wearing it…

Thanks for all. Keep it up.

    G’day.
I’m Australian. Not any old Aussie, either. I’m from the tropics, Cairns, to be precise.
Which all means that my body is about as equipped to cope with cold as your average desert lizard. This is a problem, considering it’s now nearly October, I’m still in Germany, and my German friends are deriding me as wimp for being already freezing(whad’ya mean 15 degrees C isn’t cold?).
I’m going to pedal south as fast as my little legs can carry me, and turn left at Turkey. Then Iran, then Pakistan(visas and civil unrest permitting). Which will be chilly enough. But if I fail in getting permission to cross Pakistan, I’ll be hanging another left and into Central Asia, then Tibet and Nepal into India. And they really know how to do frigid in those places.
So the obligation of the sane to be kind to the insane would dictate that you give me free warm stuff, which I will subsequently do by best to destroy, then write glowing reviews about it. Cheers 🙂

I normally do ‘bike touring for softies’ – that is travelling light and staying at hotels and guesthouses, but this winter its wild camping in the Atlas mountains, so no chance to wash clothes for days on end and I really don’t want to offend the locals by whiffing too much!
It’s going to be chilly up there too so I’m intrigued to see if Icebreaker’s reputation for warm gear that wont get too smelly, actually holds up.

In particular, I’m really excited about their new cycling and running lineup – would love the chance to test them out and report on how they hold up!

For the past year I’ve been wearing an Icebreaker SS Atlas as my base layer for every ride. I love it. Last month I did the Seattle to Vancouver ride, and it kept me cool despite the 90 deg heat. Two weeks ago I did the Mt. Baker hill climb in a cold, driving rain, and it kept me warm even when I was standing around soggy at the top. And I love that I can wear it for weeks without it getting stinky, even when it’s got a nice patina of sweatsalt on it. Pick me and you’ll get a thorough testing through the rain and road grit of Seattle winter commuting.

Oh yeah forgot to add, thanks to your review on the IB socks, I went out and bought myself a pair and have been wearing them continuously 5-7 days at a time. Mates,

Love the gear reviews! Got in to Icebreaker gear when I was down in OZ a couple winters ago (my summers in the northern hemisphere) & haven’t looked back. I use it for everything from biking and running to skiing, tennis, and football. I’ve slowly been replacing all my synthetics with IB merino.

Love to be a tester because I’d use it day after day in all of my outdoor (and some indoor) activities too. I like to push myself to perform when im out and i want my gear to do the same. Icebreaker gear has lived up to and exceeded my expecations…and I’d love to test their new gear to see if it’s as good as my other icebreaker layers. hook me up so i can keep spreading the word here in the US where IB isn’t as well known.

also, keep the great site up and running..i’m starting to put together a trip to NZ and want MTN biking to play a big part in it!

I biked down the Loire River Valley in France last year- all by myself with way too much camping gear on the back and a basket on the front. I developed the mother of all rashes- and it was big job trying to explain that to a pharmacist in my school girl French. Ouch! Now I want to bike a few of our great NZ rivers and Icebreaker gear will be just the trick to keep me dry and rash free: I hope!

    Hi Andrew and Friedel,

I think I would be a perfect candidate to test the latest Icebreaker tops for the following reasons:

    1. Australia (Where I’m from.) has a massive Marino sheep population. I think, given the rivalry between Aussies and Kiwis it is only fair that an Aussie should be given an opportunity to road-test the quality of merchandise produced by our nearest neighbours and our biggest competitors in the Merino wool industry. :o)

    2. As the proud owner of a number of Merino wool travel garments already, I think I would make a great product tester as I think I know what sorts of things a tester should be looking for in a Merino wool garment.

    3. Unlike the northern hemisphere (Where I gather a good proportion of the respondents are from.), Australia is now heading into it’s summer. If you are interested in having reviews that will (hopefully!) demonstrate the versatility of Marino wool garments across a number of climates, I can’t think of a hotter, sweatier place to send a garment for it to be reviewed!

    4. I’m an avid cycler and am very keen to try some cycle-specific Merino clothing. I undertake rides of various distances across any given week and I can certainly put it through its paces.

Thanks for taking the time to consider my application! Have a good one!

I would love to be a tester as I am a new bicycle commuter in Chicago, Illinois. It’s starting to cool off here, too. I ski every winter (mostly in icebreaker and nau clothing) and I’m familiar with how well they work in those situations, but I’m curious about performance of the clothing going directly into the office after cycling (we don’t have showers here!)

This is such an inspiring website.
I would love to be a tester for Icebreaker cycling clothing. I have recently purchase my road bike and am having difficulty finding clothing that fits a more curveous figure. All the synthetic fabric tend to be very figure hugging. I would love the opportunity as a new person to the sport of cycling to give my opinion on how the garments perform.

My dream job would be testing gear for companies and telling them how it is. I can’t seem to land that job without being a super-popular athlete, so this is my plan B. My task, if I’m randomly picked, is to test this new line to the extreme. While I’m not touring countries right now on my bike, I am touring our fair city while taking my kids to preschool on my bike with them in tow. After a month I will let you and Icebreaker know how they faired against the elements and preschoolers. Cheers and best of luck to everyone.

What an opportunity for me to put my wool where my mouth is. I have spread the news of how great Icebreaker can be the solution for fast and light travel; especially on long trips. A few of my friends and fiancee have cross over. But an opportunity to convert my biking friends is priceless. I know the Team at Icebreakers do their own product testing in house, but you need more help. Some of users would like to contribute to the success of our personal investment. For example some of your under garments can loose integrity, and create finger size holes…Or maybe the shape and placement of certain cross patterns can differ around the body. There are users out there who really believe in your product. We want an opportunity to test it, and later buy it knowing that it will last. The biggest disappointment is buying something you thought would be an investment but later regret spending too much resources to pursue such an ideal.

    Hi there,

Writing from the southern most part of the Netherlands. Today we are cycling into Germany on day 10 of our 11 month tour. We are a Canadian couple who just finished our undergraduate degrees and decided to take the year off before starting our masters. We are excited to tour Europe in the off season because it offers a more intimate experience however, we are facing cold and wet conditions. As students Icebreaker is but a dream, although this contest might make it a reality. We have a travel blog where we could showcase the photos of the gear… acworldbiketour.wordpress.com. Also we are starting to get a little smelly and we hope the wool will help with this in addition to keeping us warm when wet! Thanks for the consideration and your site, it has provided us with a lot of useful information on perparing our first large tour.

G’day Whilst most people might think of Australia as a hot and dry place, the nation’s capital Canberra sits at the northern end of the Australian Alps, and has bitterly cold winters. Riding around this sort of terrain the weather can do anything, -7 degree frosty winter mornings or +40 degree summer days. One constant in most fields when riding in the country is the merino sheep who appear to be laughing at the foolish humans who have not yet discovered the comfort and practicality of merino wool. We have learned to appreciate merino wool so much that Goulburn (which must be one of the windiest places ever), a town just north of here has “the Big Merino” a 10 metre high statue to the breed which has brought prosperity to the region. I would love to be able to show off a nice new IceBreaker merino wool top whilst cycling past the Big Merino.

Our next cycle adventure is Thanksgiving weekend, its a yearly thing with us. Last year it rained the first day and snowed that evening but we managed to stay dry until the brook crossing just before the end. Did not make it all the way and had to put my feet down. By the time I got them dried I hardly had any feeling but once at the truck cranked the heat. We are always looking for good wet/cold weather gears as once planned we go not matter what the weather. Last year we managed a stretch of 14 day of rain and fog at 10C. Hard the first day but after that it did not matter as long as we had something dry at the end of the day. Trust me we would be great tester of gear.

I am the tag along but I go. One of the biggest treats of the trip is when he gets up first and tosses his sleeping bag over me. I always manage to go back to sleep until breakfast is ready then get up to something warm. I figured rain would bother me but after a few days as long as I was warm everything was OK because I knew I had dry warm clothes for the end of the day. I would be the better tester because I always complain about being cold and wet even if it is just fog at 18C. I know what I like and I can tells you why I like it, what better tester could you ask for in a cycle tourist.

Despite the variety of climates, Icebreaker has never let us down in terms of warmth, cooling, no-odour, performance, style, and low weight. We love Icebreaker!

I have been kayaking the coastal shore of North America, more than 4500 miles, over the last 2 1/2 years, living entirely out of my kayak. I have virtually lived in my Icebreaker wool day in and day out, even when not paddling. Short of loosing a top and then replacing it up in Alaska, I have had the same pieces the entire time. They are all in fantastic shape, and still perform exactly like the did in the beginning. The exception are my heavy long underwear, which had the seat wear out from all the paddling miles. I still wear them, just use something underneath to protect my bumm. I would never paddle or now bike in anything else. I am preparing to tour the shores of North America by bicycle, starting in 45 days and will be taking my Icebreaker gear along with me. However, some new bike friendly kit would be a great addition.
