Another nice weekend in Scotland, this time up in Stranraer. We ended the weekend well by winning the I’Anson Cup for the second time in three years. The trophy is massive, the FA cup of curling! Thanks to Phil Barton’s sister Ann for the pictures — for once we didn’t take a camera with us! On the way back we drove through some very scenic countryside, lots of sheep and a marvellous view of Ailsa Craig, the little island where all curling stones come from. This is another posting from Glasgow Airport as well — this time with a laptop that Friedel’s borrowed from work. We’ve come into the wireless age!

A Day in Lille

Bergerac Sec, tropical flavours

We took the first Eurostar out of London on Saturday morning and headed to Lille, about 1 1/2 hours away, for a wine fair. The Vignerons Independents is an amazing fair — packed with hundreds of small producers selling their wine from across the country. Just pay your 6 euros and you’re in for a full day of tasting. We only came back with about a dozen bottles, as we had to carry them home, but we must have tasted at least 100 wines.

There was a 15-minute show near St Paul's

We went to see the Bonfire Night fireworks near St Paul’s Cathedral on Saturday night. Gorgeous!

Fireworks above Canary Wharf
They were so near our house...

“Remember, remember the fifth of November…” It’s almost that time of year again and fireworks are going off everywhere around London. Tonight I heard them go off for a good 20 minutes, before I stepped outside and found a rather big show going on, as opposed to the tiny bursts the neighbours often set off. The pics are a bit shaky as I didn’t take a tripod with me, but I think you can see the scale of the fireworks if you think that the buildings in the background are the skyscrapers of Canary Wharf!

Give a curler for Christmas…

Claudia_Toth__curli_217041gHere’s one for your Christmas list. Some curlers — including many of our friends — have produced a calendar to raise money for their teams and the sport by posing nude, or nearly nude. Apparently Austrian skip Claudia Toth – whose image you see here and who appears on the cover – previously said no to the German edition of Playboy. “I loved the whole idea behind it,” said Toth on this curling blog . “It seems like one of the very few possibilities to make curling more popular in Europe – especially Austria.”
