Bikes on ferries in Malaysia

Bikes unloaded into MalaysiaFerries are a popular way to reach Malaysia and travel around it.

Some of the most common ferry journeys are from Thailand to the islands of Langkawi and Penang and from Tioman Island on Malaysia’s east coast to Singapore.

The historic city of Malacca and Medan in Indonesia are also linked by ferry.

Taking your bike on a boat is preferable to using the bus because you don’t need to disassemble the bike.

Keep in mind:

  • You may need a bike ticket. Sometimes this is overlooked but don’t be surprised if you’re asked to pay a small fee, usually about 15 RM.
  • The bike often goes on the bow of the ferry, not inside it. Workers will help you lift your bike from dock to deck.
  • Taking your bags off the bike ahead of time makes it easier to lift on and off the boat.
