About Us
We’re Andrew & Friedel Grant — two Canadians who set off in 2006 to travel around the world by bicycle.
Our total bike bike touring experience before this trip was made up of short commutes to work along flat cycle paths and the odd day trip, with plenty of stops at nice restaurants along the way. We’re still not quite certain how that translated into the situation where Friedel said “Let’s bike around the world” and Andrew said “Sure. Why not?”
Perhaps that ultimately says a lot about the kind of people we are – people with a zest for life, who don’t procrastinate when an idea speaks to us.
Writer for Hire
Looking for someone to describe what it’s like to ride a bike around the world, picnic with Iranians or camp with Kyrgyz nomads?
Get in touch and we’d be happy to help.
We’re currently writers on long-term travel for Transitions Abroad. We’ve talked to the Amateur Traveler twice and we’ve contributed to the latest editions of Tim Leffel’s World’s Cheapest Destinations and Trailblazer’s Adventure Cycle Touring Handbook.
We’ve also created a web guide to travel and tourism in Nova Scotia.
Regardless of how it came about, we are so glad we got up the courage to hand in our notice at work, sell our house, liquidate all our posessions and set off on our global bicycle adventure. We have no regrets.
After getting some fantastic bicycles from a British bike builder Robin Mather, we completed the first leg of our tour in Eastern Canada, then moved on to Europe, Morocco, the Middle East, Central Asia, Southeast Asia, Australia, New Zealand and finally back to North America.
Phew! A massive 48,000km later, we completed our tour in October 2009 and now we’ve moved to Den Haag (The Hague), Holland, where we’re exploring life as expats.
This blog is an ongoing project to offer helpful advice on bike touring, living in The Netherlands and simple living in general.
If you have any questions, please get in touch. We’d love to hear from you! You can also sign up for our emails. From time to time we put together a little radio show (better known as a bicycle touring podcast), the RSS link can be placed into your favorite audio feed reader. We also upload videos, when internet connections cooperate with us.
