New Schwalbe Tire Replaces The Famous Marathon XR

October 16th, 2011 5 comments

Marathon Mondial TireThe robust Marathon XR touring tire developed a cult following among bicycle tourists (including us), who marvelled at its ability to resist punctures and roll for distances of 15,000-20,000 kilometers.

Then, in 2009, Schwalbe discontinued the tire – much to the disappointment of the bike touring community.

Now we can all cheer again, as Schwalbe are releasing a new tire in 2012, and they’re touting the Marathon Mondial as the “ultimate touring tire, made for roads, tracks and trails of all continents”.

Let’s hope! Yes, it’s heavy and relatively expensive but for those of us who really like to get off road (and don’t mind losing a bit of speed in exchange for reliability and durability), the Marathon Mondial could be what we’ve been missing for the last couple of years.

  1. We are currently cycling in southern africa (4000k so far) and are happy with schwalbe extreme.
I hope that the schwalbe mondial is not another marketing trick

My experience with the Marathon Extremes has been rather mixed. One tyre exploded, another had regular (almost daily) punctures yet another set from a different batch has been faultless. It appears that the quality from Schwalbe is rather variable.

I really hope that they deliver a good, reliable tyre suitable for long trips and that the Mondial is not just a re-badged XR. For those that can’t wait I suggest looking at the ‘Marathon Plus Tour’. Good profile, anti-leak layer, various sizes available and not too expensive. A bit heavy perhaps, but you can’t have everything.

I just heard recently that the Mondial is coming for 2012 (or perhaps available somewhere?). I used Schwalbe Marathon Plus Tour tires which might be the 1.1kg a piece transition between the Marathon XR and the Mondial. Those tires are still in excellent conditions after 3 provinces of China (Xinjiang/Uyghur Autonomous region, Sichuan and Yunnan), 3200km and the tires are still like-new (with some cuts to the rubber that never punctured the tube). Schwalbe. Tough.

I loved the Schwalbe Marathon XR – still do, I keep managing to find new tyres from old stock on the internet.
However, on my mountainbike I had nothing but trouble with Schwalbe tyres and therefore made the move to Continentals….and never looked back! Great quality, excellent grip, look great and function outstandingly. It’ll take a bloody good bit of rubber to get me back onto Schwalbe tryes – lets hope that the Mondial is impressive as Schwalbe will surely have us believe!
