In Memory Of Pete & Mary

Pete & MaryThe internet can do funny things sometimes, including making you feel very connected to people you’ve never met.

Pete and Mary were two such people for us. From the earliest days of their round-the-world bicycle ride we exchanged emails, chatted on Twitter and watched their videos. They even sent us photos and stories for the 2nd edition of our Bike Touring Survival Guide.

Was it any surprise then that we cried a few tears when we heard this news? Rest in peace, Pete & Mary.

So sad… I read the news yesterday and it hit me hard.
Only today I told Karla… she noticed I was not in my normal mode.
Being on a RTW cycling trip, still 3 years to go back home, it’s impossible not to relate to them… the joy they were living their life, the happiness… no words can express the sadness we feel.
Rest in Peace Pete and Mary and keep travelling with lots of free souls riding this world’s roads…

I’m so saddened by this news. I had been following their blog and had spoken to them via email before I left on my own tour. I can only echo Bikesandspices thoughts. They were living life to the full when they where taken.
    RIP Pete and Mary

Such a tragic loss, but a beautiful reminder of what it is to live life to the fullest.

I find this news to very difficult to believe. They were beautiful people that we all took great delight in following. May they rest in peace.

This is just awful. We met Mary & Peter in September 2012 as they were heading from Bishkek to Almaty and we were heading in the opposite direction (although all of us ultimately heading to China). We only chatted briefly to exchange news from up and down the road but we really enjoyed the moment and were sorry to be travelling in a different direction to them. Our hearts go out to their families and friends.

Such a sad sad loss. Pete and Mary were an inspiration
They were wringing every last drop of experience out of their lives and looked like they were loving every minute of it. Good on them. May they rest in peace.

We also exchanged emails with Pete and Mary. Such vibrant and kind people. We are incredibly shocked and saddened by the news.

Oh my god! So tragic this terrible acident. I’m really shaken up. But, like my husband says, they died doing what they liked the most and they died together. And for those out there who haven’t cycled Thailand, don’t worry the roads are safe, it was an accident.

It is very sad to see such young lives taken in such a tragic way. I did not know Pete and Mary, but i am in the stages of planning our first overseas bicycle trip, so one follows everyone and everything closely, so in a sense, we feel we have a connection to all of you, even Pete and Mary, that is why it hurts us all. They will be remembered always. I hope to meet some of you in Europe in 2014. Be Safe, Ant

This was sad news, but they went the way I want to – on thier bikes, doing what they loved.

I’ve done some touring…best was Prague to Berlin to Amsterdam..and I’m in the midst of planning a solo RTW excursion…at the age of 54 now and I’d rather die doing that than sitting here planning…I wish I had met them and want to meet many of you and dream of meeting “the one” somehow out there…I wish this hadn’t happened but it did…I’ve been to Thailand and want to bike there and when I do I will carry a prayer (my thing) for them…safe travels to all of you

I need to earn the money first and will be teaching English in Korea (again) from this coming Summer to next…the next leg is from Prague to Istanbul after that, the rest will follow as it will…and an Aussie trek for me is a later hope…but not to look too forward or always behind, though I still want to remember this was about Pete and Mary and now its about those who knew them and loved them…but anyone who has done this..in foul weather..with low resources..looking in fading light for a place to light their head knows..REALLY KNOWS what its like to earn a rest, to savor a tent meal and to find some compatriots in grand adventure…in short we all know a little about Pete and Mary

Geez. A Daughter lost, a Son lost :-( I read up on this accident. Dude driving was reaching down for a mobile phone. He is now out on bail. Maximum penalty ? Ten years…….. I bet he won’t get half of that. Typical globally of cycling / motor vehicle related fatalities. My thoughts are with both families
